Types of Skill Visa

Skilled Independent Subclass 189 Visa

This is a permanent visa. This is for workers, eligible citizens of New Zealand and eligible Hong Kong or British National (Overseas) passport holders with skills.

  • You can enrol in the Public Health Scheme of Australia
  • You can travel to and from Australia for 5 years.

​Eligibility:

  • You can apply if Department invites you to apply and then submit an EOI.
  • You must have a suitable skill Assessment to show your skills.
  • You must be under the age of 45.
  • You must be able to score 65 or more. It depends on the claim in the EOI.
  • You must be competent in the English language.
  • You must meet the health and character requirements of Australia.
  • You must not have had a cancelled visa, or a previous application refused.
​The Process:

  • Nomination by a State or Territory Government
  • Each State and Territory Government has its own list of occupations in demand in their area.
  • There may be specific requirements in relation to your work experience, English language ability or specialised skills.
  • Submit an expression of interest (EOI) via Skill Select with details of your nominated occupation, skills, and qualifications.
  • Skill Select will estimate points score; if you score high enough, Australian state and territory government agencies will be able to view your EOI and decide if they want to nominate you.
  • If you are nominated by a state or territory agency, you will be invited to apply for the visa. If you are invited, you have 60 calendar days to apply for the visa. We will then process your visa application.
​Occupation:
Your occupation must be on the relevant list of eligible skilled occupations.
You must have a skills assessment that shows you have the skills and qualifications to work in that occupation.

Points score:

  • You must be able to meet the points score on your invitation letter. This score will be 65 points (as of 1 July 2018) or more.
  • The score on your invitation letter is based on the information in your EOI.
  • You must be able to meet the points score eligibility at the time you are invited to apply for the visa. Everyone who wants to be invited to apply for the visa must submit an EOI. When you submit your EOI you will be ranked against other intending applicants and might be invited to apply for the visa (your EOI will stay in the pool for up to 2 years).  There is no cost to submit an EOI.

Can I Apply in Australia or Overseas?
You can be in or outside Australia when you submit your EOI. You can be in Australia or overseas when applying for a Subclass 189 Skilled Independent Visa. To be able to lodge from within Australia, you would need to hold a substantive visa or a Bridging A, B or C visa. Once you apply from within Australia, you will receive a bridging visa allowing you to remain in Australia during the processing of your visa application. If your current visa is refused or cancelled, you might not be eligible to apply for the 189 visa while you were in Australia.

New Zealand stream

This visa lets eligible New Zealand citizens who have demonstrated commitment and contribution to Australia, live and work in Australia permanently.

You must have lived in Australia for at least the last 5 years.
You must have started living here on or before 19 February 2016
