The New Zealand government has announced a new post-study work route that will allow eligible international students to stay and work in the country for up to six months after finishing their courses, with applications opening on November 16, 2026.
The newly introduced Short-Term Graduate Work Visa is designed to serve as an employment bridge for international graduates whose credentials do not qualify them for New Zealand’s existing multi-year Post-Study Work Visa.
According to Immigration New Zealand, the visa grants open work rights, enabling holders to work for virtually any employer across the country without requiring an upfront job offer. The permit cannot be renewed or extended. Still, officials noted it provides holders a critical window to gain local work experience and transition to longer-term employment visas, such as the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV).

Eligibility Requirements

- Eligible Qualifications: Applicants must have completed a New Zealand Qualifications and Qualifications Framework (NZQCF) Level 5, 6, or 7 qualification.
- Duration of Study: The course must have involved full-time study in New Zealand for at least 24 weeks. Foundation, English-language, and bridging courses are strictly excluded.
- Non-Duplication: The completed course must not already make the applicant eligible for the standard Post-Study Work Visa.
- Funds & Health: Candidates must have a minimum of NZ$5,000 in available funds to support themselves, along with standard health and character clearances.
- Strict Filing Window: Applications must be lodged within three months of the expiration of the applicant’s New Zealand student visa.
Visa holders are restricted from operating or owning a business and must work under a formal employment agreement or contract for services.
Expanded Pathways for Degree Holders
Alongside the short-term permit, New Zealand also announced an expansion of its existing Post-Study Work Visa rules, effective November 16.
Under the revised criteria, international students who complete an eligible Level 7 Graduate Diploma in New Zealand will now qualify for a standard Post-Study Work Visa—provided they already hold an undergraduate bachelor’s degree, whether earned in New Zealand or abroad.
The full-length Post-Study Work Visa continues to offer up to one year of open work rights for eligible Level 8 postgraduate diploma graduates and up to three years for qualifying master’s and doctoral degree holders.
Immigration authorities stated that the adjustments aim to boost New Zealand’s competitiveness in the global international education sector while directly channeling foreign student talent into high-demand workforce sectors.
